The Department of Defense (Pentagon) has begun to recruit Algerian spies, mostly journalists, lawyers and intellectuals, under the cover of journalism activities; collecting information on social, political and economic topics in Algeria, and published on a Websites of the U.S. military command in Africa ...AFRICOM....

The website ‘Magharebia,’ openly and directly managed by the U.S. Department of Defense, addresses issues related to the Arab Maghreb, including Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, written by Algerian intellectuals living in Algeria or outside of Algeria who mastered the three languages.

According to the site’s content, the U.S. military command in Africa ‘AFRICOM’, Algerian journalists, who are hired as correspondents, or those residing outside of Algeria, are regarded as ‘analysts,’ who receive salaries from the Ministry of Defense, under a contract that binds both parties. This is revealed by the site itself that says: “Six days per week, the site captures the top news from across the region as reported in local and international media. It also features analysis, interviews and commentary by paid Magharebia correspondents in the region.”

Based on information, much of the latter are selected by the Embassy of the United States of America, and most of them have already visited the United States of America through an international program for Algerian journalists and certain categories from the civil society. Visits of 21 days are held every year to more than 50 Algerian and this, without interruption since 1992. Approximately 1000 of Algerians visited the USA, many of whom were selected for the network ‘Magharebia.’
